My role as a father is my most important priority in life and my greatest passion. I understand, however, that parenting children is not always easy and sometimes it’s difficult to know exactly what our children need from us.
Coaching for parents
Some of us grew up with one or both parents absent from our lives. Others were parented in ways they do not wish to repeat and want to do better for their children. If this is how we feel, who do we model our behavior after? Where do we learn the skills to do better?
Many of us read books and websites filled with advice on parenting. This can be very useful, however, every family and child is different, and the one-way communication of any book or blog has limits in how helpful it can be. We cannot have an open dialogue with a book. This is where a parenting coach can provide specific guidance and support tailored to your unique relationship with your child(ren) and family.
The difference between coaching and therapy
The most important thing to understand is that coaching is not therapy. A coach will set up a short or long term process that will clarify goals and identify problems and obstacles. The focus of a parenting coach is to educate and develop an action plan to achieve your goals as a parent.
Parent coaching is unique. It is a process designed to bring out the best in you and your children. A parenting coach will provide insights into what your children need and what kind of goals are achievable from your own, individual starting point. It is elevating the experience of your family to a higher level.
Who can benefit from parent coaching?
Each generation parents their children differently. As we learn more about child development we change how we relate to our children. We incorporate what we know about child development and emotional needs in order to give our children the best chance possible in life.
If you feel you didn’t learn appropriate parenting skills from your own parents, you may want to do better but are unsure what to do and are open to guidance from an expert. You wish to nurture your relationship with your child(ren) and give them what they need.
There are no perfect parents, but making the effort to give your children the best possible environment can make all the difference in their relationship with you, themselves, and the world.
